STUBBS AND VINEGAR

or… ‘A stubby and a chippy’

G’day champions, Stubbsy here. Did I ever tell you that I invented salt and vinegar chips? It was the spring of 1972 and I was working in the salt mines of Dapto, and after every shift I’d pop off to the pub for a cool drink in one of my custom-printed stubby coolers and a bag of chips.
Chippies were all a bit boring and bland back then – sort of like a stubby cooler without your own photo printed on it – because they didn’t have flavouring. One arvo I was in a rush and forgot to wash my hands after a big day of salt mining, and when I got stuck into my chips, I was amazed by the results!
Then my mate Olaf offered me a jar of his home-made pickles, and of course I accepted. After reaching into the jar of vinegar and chomping on a gherkin, I went back to my bag of chips. The potato, salt and vinegar were a taste sensation, and soon everyone in town was enjoying salt and vinegar chips every day. The whole world fell in love with my recipe, and I’m pretty sure they gave me the Nobel Prize.
Next time you’re gulping down a big bag of salt and vinegar chips, think of your hero Don Stubbs, and grab yourself a few of my famous stubby coolers!
